Fulltone OCD - All the 9 Versions

All the versions of the Fulltone OCD may be recognized by their serial number or, in case of the version 2, by the look of the pedal.

Fulltone stated that there was always one version of the OCD because the changes made to the pedal over the time were always so small that it was not possible to speak of a version 2, 3, 4, etc.
On date 06.15.2017, however, they released the Official Version 2!
Regardless of the version, all OCDs prove to be very good pedals, some with less bass, others with less treble and some with less gain available, but they always share sound transparency, power and versatility.

fulltone-ocd-v1-small VERSION 1.1 - From number #0000 to about number #4563.

Features: a lot of low and high end.

Usually inside the pedal the grey rubber covers almost all the circuit board. Many of theese pedals have white pots intread the black ones.

fulltone-ocd-v2-small VERSION 1.2 - From number #4564 to about number #9473.

Changes made: replaced the volume pot (from 100K to 500K).
Features: less low end, more mids, softer high end.

Usually inside the pedal the grey rubber covers only the bottom left of the circuit board.

I have written a review in italian about the OCD V1.2 that is actually my favorite version.

fulltone-ocd-v3-small VERSION 1.3 - From number #9474 to about number #16060.

Changes made: replaced the drive pot (from 500K to 1Mega) since the number 9127; replaced the tone capacitor (from 0.1u to 0.047u); replaced the tone pot (from 25K to 10K).
Features: more powerful midrange, more sustain, more control of the tone.

Some units under the number 16060 are marked as V1.4 but still present the V1..3's circuit. Consequently, they have a different sound from the V1.4.

fulltone-ocd-v4-small VERSION 1.4 - From number #16061.

Changes made: added a germanium diode in the clipping section; replaced the volume pot with a logarithmic one; decreased the values of the opamp and tone capacitors to have a lower bass response. The color of the led now is red instead of blue. It's one of the most widespread versions, along the V1.7.
Features: less low end, more harmonics, more control over the volume.

fulltone-ocd-v4-small VERSION 1.5 and 1.6 - the number of the verson is written inside the pedal, with the sign V 1.6.

There is only a little quantity of version 1.5, it seems that the Fulltone has gone almost directly to the V1.6, maybe after some tests.
Features: coming soon.

fulltone-ocd-v4-small VERSION 1.7 - the number of the verson is written inside the pedal, with the sign V 1.7.

Changes made: coming soon. It's one of the most widespread versions, along the V1.4.

VERSION 2.0 - Version 2.0 can be quickly detected through the new aesthetic choices applied to the pedal: under the word Fulltone has been added "Built in the USA"; the jack input and output have been moved exactly half way the length of the pedal (they were located more towards the bottom.); The OCD logo is slightly smaller. Additionally, on the box you may read the additional phrase "With internally selectable "True-Bypass" or "Enhanced Bypass" ".

Changes made: input impedance changed from 330K to 1 mega ohms, internal switch to choose True Bypass or Enhanced Bypass (a sort of buffer 2.0), Fulltone switched to Surface-mount technology (SMT).
Features: a complete different sound, more bottom end. I have written a review in italian about the Fulltone OCD V2.

In 2018, a limited black edition was released for the Chicago Music Exchange. Only the color of the pedal changes.

In 2019 another limited edition was released, this time the color is red.

Ge VERSION - Customshop - 2019 - The color of the box is aquamarine (the color is light blue but tends towards green according to light reflections), with the word "Ge" on the right of the on/off switch. Blue led.

Changes made: custom circuit with the introduction of two germanium diodes in the clipping section, a "return to the origins" since some old versions of the OCD had one of them (for example, version 1.4). Limited edition based on the availability of these diodes.
Features: great definition, more tube-like feel, a bit wider dynamic range, more sustain, and a more focused single-note tone.

The Sound

The differences between the version 1.1 and 1.2 are really minimal, the control over the volume is more sensitive and the sound is pretty similar. The high end is softer and the low end weaker. This V1.2 is actually my favorite one.
In the version 1.3 the differences are more pronounced, the level of the volume and the distorsion have been increased, the midrange is boosted and there is lesser high end.
Version 1.4 further modifies the sound of the previous one. Asymmetric clipping creates more harmonics and the sound is more round and clear. Compared to version 1.3, the V1.4 has less distortion and a more fluid and natural sound. As soon as i can test versions 1.6, 1.7 and V2.0 i will include the details of the latter.
The version V2 has a complete different sound compared to the previous ones, with more bottom end.
The "Ge" version is also very different from the current OCD 2.0, as soon as I have the opportunity to try it myself I will write a dedicated review.

However, regardless of the chosen version, the OCD is a devastating pedal and its distortion has entered my personal ranking of the best guitar distortions!

Le versioni dell'OCD possono essere individuate tramite il numero seriale e, nel caso della versione 2, dall'aspetto estetico del pedale.

La Fulltone ha dichiarato che in realtà è sempre esistita una sola versione dell'OCD perché le modifiche apportate al pedale nel tempo erano sempre così ridotte che non si poteva parlare propriamente di una versione 2, 3, 4, ecc.
In data 15.06.2017 è però uscita la Versione 2 Ufficiale!
Indipendentemente dalla versione, tutti gli OCD si rivelano essere pedali molto validi, alcuni con meno bassi, altri con meno alti e alcuni con meno gain a disposizione, ma condividono sempre la trasparenza del suono, la potenza e la versatilità.

Caratteristiche: molti bassi, molto high end.

All'interno la gomma grigia ricopre gran parte del circuito. Spesso il pedale possiede potenziometri bianchi.

fulltone-ocd-v2-small VERSIONE 1.2 - Dal numero seriale # 4564 al numero #9473 circa.

Modifiche: sostituito potenziometro del volume (da 100K a 500K).
Caratteristiche: meno bassi, più medi, high end più morbido.

All'interno la gomma grigia ricopre solo la parte in fondo a sinistra del circuito.

fulltone-ocd-v3-small VERSIONE 1.3 - Dal numero seriale #9474 al numero #16060 circa.

Modifiche: sostituito potenziometro del drive (da 500K a 1Mega) dal numero 9127 in su, sostituito capacitor del tono (da 0.1u a 0.047u), sostituito potenziometro del tono (da 25K a 10K).
Caratteristiche: midrange più potente, più sustain, maggiore controllo dei toni.

Alcuni esemplari al di sotto del numero 16060 sono marcati V1.4 ma presentano ancora il circuito del V1.3 e non hanno tutte le modifiche introdotte nella versione successiva, differiscono quindi nel suono.

fulltone-ocd-v4-small VERSIONE 1.4 - Dal numero seriale #16060.

Modifiche: aggiunto diodo al germanio nella sezione del clipping, sostituito potenziometro del volume con uno logaritmico, diminuiti i valori dei condensatori dell'opamp e del tono per una minore risposta dei bassi. Led rosso. E' una delle versioni più diffuse insieme alla V1.7.
Caratteristiche: meno bassi, più armoniche, più controllo sul volume.

fulltone-ocd-v4-small VERSIONE 1.5 e 1.6 - Il numero della versione è scritto all'interno del pedalino, con la sigla V 1.6.

Della versione 1.5 ne esiste solo una piccolissima quantità, sembra che la Fulltone dopo qualche sperimentazione sia passata direttamente alla V1.6.
Modifiche: prossimamente.

fulltone-ocd-v4-small VERSIONE 1.7 - Il numero della versione è scritto all'interno del pedalino, con la sigla V 1.7.

Modifiche: prossimamente. E' una delle versioni più diffuse insieme alla V1.4.

VERSIONE 2.0 - 2017 - La versione 2.0 può essere individuata velocemente tramite le nuove scelte estetiche applicate al pedale: Sotto la scritta Fulltone, in basso, è stato aggiunto "Built in the USA"; l'entrata e l'uscita jack sono state spostate esattamente al centro della scocca del pedale (prima erano posizionate verso il basso); la scritta OCD è leggermente più piccola. Inoltre sulla scatola è stata aggiunta la scritta “With internally selectable “True-Bypass” or “Enhanced Bypass” ".

Modifiche: si può attivare un buffer tramite uno switch interno (chiamato Enhanced Bypass), aumentata l'impedenza di entrata da 330K a 1 mega ohm, passaggio a componenti miniaturizzati.
Caratteristiche: suono molto diverso dai precedenti, più presente sui bassi. Per approfondire leggi la recensione che ho scritto sul pedale Fulltone OCD V2!

Nel 2018 è uscita un'edizione limitata di colore nero in occasione del Chicago Music Exchange. A cambiare è solo il colore del pedale.

Nel 2019 è uscita un'altra edizione limitata, questa volta di colore rosso.

VERSIONE Ge - Customshop - 2019 - Pedale di colore verde acqua (il colore è azzurro ma tende leggermente verso il verde in base ai riflessi della luce), con la scritta "Ge" sulla destra dello switch di accensione. Led blu.

Modifiche: circuito personalizzato con l'introduzione di due diodi al germanio nella sezione del clipping, un "ritorno alle origini" visto che alcune versioni passate dell'OCD ne possedevano uno (per esempio la versione 1.4). Edizione limitata in base alla disponibilità di questi diodi.
Caratteristiche: ottima definizione del suono, sensibilità che ricorda la saturazione valvolare, un po' più di risposta dinamica, più sustain, tono più conciso nel suonare note singole.

IL SUONO

Le differenze tra la versione 1.1 e la versione 1.2 sono minime, il controllo del volume è più delicato e il suono non differisce di molto. L'high end è più morbido e i bassi un po' più deboli.
Nella versione 1.3 le differenze sonore sono maggiori, il livello del volume e della distorsione sono aumentati, il midrange è pesantemente boostato e l'high end diminuito. Le differenze tra questa versione e le precedenti sono evidenti.
La versione 1.4 modifica ulteriormente il suono della precedente. Il clipping asimmetrico crea armoniche più presenti ed il suono è più rotondo e chiaro. In confronto alla versione 1.3, la V1.4 ha meno gain e un suono più fluido e naturale. Non appena riuscirò a testare le versioni 1.6 e 1.7 inserirò i dettagli riguardanti queste ultime.
La versione 2 invece ha un suono molto differente dalle precedenti e molto presente sui medio-bassi, se vuoi approfondire leggi la recensione che ho scritto sul pedale Fulltone OCD V2!
La versione "Ge" a sua volta si distingue molto dall'attuale OCD 2.0, appena avrò occasione di provarlo in prima persona scriverò una recensione dedicata.

Comunque, indipendentemente dalla versione scelta, l'OCD è un pedale devastante e la sua distorsione è entrata nella mia personale classifica delle migliori distorsioni per chitarra!
